Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit).
  2. Grease and line the base of two cake tins, preferably 7.5 inch
  3. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and airy.
  4. Then add the eggs one at a time, mixing in a small amount of flour after each addition to prevent curdling. Mix until well combined.
  5. Add the rest of the flour, vanilla extract, cocoa, and mix until thoroughly combined.
  6. Next, evenly pour the cake batter into the prepared cake tins.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until fully baked. To check if they're done, insert a toothpick into the center of the cakes, if it comes out clean, they're ready.
  8. Take out of the oven and let the cakes cool in the tins for a little while, before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. To help flatten the dome of one of the cakes, turn it upside down while it cools. This will make it easier to stack the two layers together.
  10. To prepare the filling and topping.
  11. In a heatproof bowl place over a pan of simmering water, melt the chocolate and butter together, stirring frequently until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly
  12. Spread the chocolate spread filling evenly on both sides of the cake layers and then sandwich them togather, handle carefully so as to not rip the cake
  13. Then pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the top of the cake, ensuring it covers the entire surface.
  14. Finally sprinkle a generous amount of chocolate shavings on the top of the cake and enjoy!
